How to Prepare for Air Duct Cleaning

A little prep makes your visit smoother and faster. Our crews handle containment, cleaning, and cleanup; you make sure we can reach vents and the air handler without obstacles. Here’s what to do and what to expect.

Why Preparing for Air Duct Cleaning Matters

Good access helps us set up negative pressure, protect floors, and move through rooms efficiently. That shortens the visit and helps us capture dust at the source instead of stirring it up in living spaces.

Pre-Visit Checklist (5–10 minutes)
Before the crew arrives, take a few minutes to set up your home for a smooth visit.

  • Clear 3–4 ft around supply/return vents and the air handler
  • Put pets in a comfy room during setup
  • Share parking/gate info and preferred entry path
  • Move fragile or sentimental items near vents
  • Tell us about special rooms (nursery, office, allergies)

Clear Access to Vents and the Air Handler

We’ll protect floors and set up equipment near the air handler, returns, and main supplies. Clear lamps, plants, and décor near registers so we can cover vents, agitate ducts, and connect hoses without delays.

Please leave a 36″ path from the entry to the air handler, clear a small equipment staging area, and share any gate codes or parking instructions. If we’ll need attic access, make sure the fold-down ladder area is clear and safe to use.

Pets, Kids, and Privacy

Doors can be open briefly during setup and equipment moves. Keep pets in a quiet room until we’re done with each zone, and let us know if anyone is working from home or sleeping so we can plan the order of rooms.

Protect Valuables and Fragile Items

Pros set up negative pressure, register covers, and floor protection so dust stays inside the system and goes into HEPA filtration. Still, move fragile or sentimental items in work areas, and point out anything especially valuable you want us to avoid.

Know What to Expect During the Cleaning Process

Most homes take 2–4 hours per system. Larger homes, long duct runs, or heavy pet hair can add time. We’ll walk you through the plan, cover registers, set up containment and negative pressure, clean each run, and finish with a walkthrough.

We’ll Turn the HVAC Off on Arrival

You don’t have to shut anything down ahead of time. Our techs turn the system off before setup and back on after cleanup. If you prefer, set the thermostat to OFF about 30 minutes before we arrive.

After-Cleaning Tips for Homeowners

A few simple habits help keep results longer. These are easy to remember and quick to do.

  • Change filters on schedule; consider a higher MERV if your system allows it
  • Keep the area around the air handler clean and easy to access
  • Watch for unusual odors or airflow changes and call us if they return
  • Review ENERGY STAR maintenance tips to keep HVAC efficient

Questions to Ask Your Technician

Asking a few practical questions ensures you understand the work and the results. It also helps us tailor the visit to your home.

  • What areas had the heaviest buildup, and why?
  • Do you recommend sanitizing or deodorizing after cleaning?
  • Are there leaks or gaps that would benefit from duct sealing?
  • Were there any limited-access sections we should address later?
  • What filter type and change schedule do you suggest for this system?
